I approached this race with a lot of hesitance. I had already raced the Blue Ridge Half Marathon just 2 weeks ago, and the Trail Nut 10k last body really needs a break from running for a good 10-20 days.

But the Gallop For The Greenways is for a good cause and I do use the Roanoke greenways so why not give it a shot? Besides, the pattern of 1/2 marathon, 10k, 5k was an intriguing method to come down off my current training peak with cutting the distance in half and doing no running between events.

Having done little to no training in the sub 7's since February, I wasn't looking to meet my typical 5k goals of a sub 20 or of finishing with a sub 7 pace. I even did a hard 1 hr 40 min elliptical workout about 3-4 hours before the race just to emphasize some pre race burnout so my expectations would be diminished thus sparing me any disappointment if I finished with a pace above 7.

I surprised myself.

Running 3 races in 3 weekends with 3 top-3 Age Group finishes was not something that seemed likely based on my current stats. I suspect I was somewhat aided by several luck factors such as the high number of races going on this time of year having a tendency to spread the competition out...still, I got what I worked for so I'm not diminishing the achievement.
